Choosing between metro and taxi

The metro is cheap, air conditioned and avoids traffic. A taxi is faster door to door and much easier with luggage. For one or two people with carry-on bags heading to a metro-served hotel, the train wins. For anyone else, a taxi usually makes more sense.

Metro

The Red Line has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 and runs through Deira, along the main highway and past the main Downtown stations. Trains are driverless, frequent and clean, with designated cabins for women and children and a gold class option.

• You need a rechargeable travel card, sold at the station. It cannot be bought on the train.
• There is limited luggage space on board, and large cases are technically restricted at busy times.
• The metro does not run through the whole night, and hours are shorter on some days of the week.

Taxis

Taxis are metered with an airport starting rate. They queue outside every terminal and there is rarely a long wait. Vehicles are clean, air conditioned and card payment is normally accepted.

Traffic along the main corridor can be heavy in the morning and evening, but even then the journey rarely exceeds 45 minutes to Downtown.

Ride-hailing and private transfers

Ride-hailing apps operate at DXB with designated pickup areas. Prices are quoted in advance, which some travellers prefer. Private transfers with a meet-and-greet service are widely available and worth considering after a long-haul arrival.

Buses

Public bus routes serve the airport and cost very little, but they are slow, stop often and are not designed for large suitcases. They are mainly useful for residents rather than arriving visitors.

Where you are going matters

• Deira and the creek: 10 to 15 minutes by taxi, a few metro stops away.
• Downtown and the main mall district: 20 to 30 minutes by road.
• Marina and the beach areas: 30 to 45 minutes, longer in peak traffic.
• Business Bay: similar to Downtown, well served by the metro.

Practical notes

• Summer heat is intense. Even a five minute walk between a metro exit and a hotel is unpleasant in July and August.
• Cash is rarely needed, but small notes are handy for a bus or a tip.
• Keep your passport with you. Hotels will ask for it at check-in.

Families and accessibility

The metro is fully step-free with lifts at every station and dedicated spaces for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Taxis are the easier option with small children and luggage, and larger vehicles can be requested at the rank. Accessible taxis are available on request.
