Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions we are asked most. Each one links through to a full guide where the detail matters.
At the airport
- How early should I arrive for my flight?
- Roughly 90 minutes for a domestic flight with hand luggage, two hours with checked bags, and three hours for an international departure from a large hub. Add time at peak hours and when travelling with children.
- When does check-in close?
- Bag drop usually closes 45 to 60 minutes before departure and up to 90 minutes on some long haul flights. Gates typically close 15 to 20 minutes before departure.
- Do I need to take my laptop out at security?
- At older checkpoints yes. Where modern scanners are installed, signage will tell you that laptops and liquids may stay in the bag.
Baggage
- How much can a checked bag weigh?
- Commonly 23 kg per bag on international economy fares. Above 32 kg most airlines refuse a single piece for handling reasons.
- Can I carry a power bank?
- Yes, but only in the cabin. Spare lithium batteries are not allowed in checked baggage.
- My bag did not arrive. What do I do first?
- File a report at the baggage service desk before leaving the reclaim hall and keep the file reference. Most delayed bags arrive within 24 to 48 hours.
Delays, cancellations and connections
- What am I owed when a flight is delayed?
- Duty of care such as meals and, for overnight delays, accommodation usually applies regardless of cause. Cash compensation generally applies only where the cause was within the airline's control.
- My flight was cancelled. Refund or rebooking?
- The choice is normally yours: a replacement flight at the earliest opportunity, or a refund of the unused portion of the ticket. A voucher is not a substitute for a refund.
- What happens if I miss a connection?
- On a single ticket the airline rebooks you at no cost and handles your bags. On separate tickets the second airline has no obligation, so you may need a new ticket.
Layovers
- How long a layover do I need to leave the airport?
- As a rule, at least six hours, and preferably more. Subtract immigration, baggage and re-screening time before deciding.
- Can I sleep inside an airport?
- At many large hubs yes, in designated rest areas. Several airports also have transit hotels or sleep pods sold in blocks of hours.
