Layovers
10 Hours at Changi Airport
The rare airport where staying inside is the better plan

Changi is the one major hub where the honest advice is that you might prefer to stay. The airport has gardens, a cinema, a swimming pool, showers, sleep areas and food that people travel to eat.
That said, Singapore is close, formalities are quick and the metro is straightforward. Ten hours supports either plan, so choose deliberately instead of drifting.
The realistic timeline
| Step | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Arrival formalities | 10 to 30 minutes |
| Metro into the city | 35 to 45 minutes |
| Return journey | 35 to 45 minutes |
| Departure formalities and gate screening | 60 to 90 minutes |
Note the gate screening. At Changi, security is often performed at the gate rather than at a central checkpoint, so being at the gate an hour before departure is not optional.
What the airport itself offers

- Indoor gardens across the terminals, including butterfly and cactus gardens.
- A free cinema and entertainment areas open around the clock.
- A rooftop pool with showers, sold as a day entry.
- Free transit tours of the city, run by the airport for passengers with a long enough connection.
- Rest zones with reclining seats, plus paid transit hotels for a proper sleep.
A Singapore plan that fits
Six usable hours in the city is enough for one area plus a meal. Take the metro rather than a taxi; it is cheap, air conditioned and immune to the afternoon traffic.
- Marina Bay: waterfront walk, the gardens and the evening light show.
- Chinatown and the civic district: temples, street food and a museum.
- Kampong Glam and Little India: markets, textiles and the best short-notice eating.
Rest, showers and food

Transit hotels inside the transit area sell blocks of six hours, which fits this layover precisely. Showers are available separately, and the staff canteen style food halls are cheaper and better than the branded outlets.
Getting back
- Allow 90 minutes between leaving the city and being at your gate.
- The metro stops before very late night; check the last train if your flight is after midnight.
- Terminals are linked by a free automated train, but it still takes 10 to 15 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
- Are the free Singapore transit tours still available?
- The airport runs free city tours for transit passengers with a sufficiently long connection. Sign up at the tour counter on arrival, as places are limited.
- Can I shower at Changi?
- Yes. Paid shower facilities and the rooftop pool day entry both include showers, and most lounges have them too.
- Is ten hours enough to visit Singapore?
- Yes, comfortably enough for one district and a meal, thanks to fast formalities and a direct metro line.
- Do I need to clear security again at the gate?
- At Changi screening is frequently done at the gate, so arrive at the gate at least an hour before departure.
