LAX is arranged as a horseshoe of terminals around a central road loop. Some are connected airside by walkways and some are not, which is the single most important thing to check before a connection here.
The other constant is traffic. The loop road is congested for much of the day, and the surrounding freeways are unpredictable, so timing your arrival matters more than at most airports.
Terminals and connections
Airside connectors link several terminals, including a tunnel and walkways between the international terminal and neighbouring domestic terminals. Where no connector exists, you leave security and take a shuttle bus around the loop.
- Check whether your two terminals are connected airside before assuming a 60 minute connection is enough.
- Where a shuttle is needed, allow 45 to 60 minutes including re-screening.
- International arrivals connecting onward must collect checked bags, clear customs and re-check them.
Airport to city
Los Angeles is spread out, so the right transport depends heavily on where you are going. Downtown, Santa Monica, Hollywood and Long Beach are all very different journeys.

Ride-hailing pickups happen from a designated area rather than at the terminal kerb, reached by shuttle bus. Factor in 10 to 20 minutes for that step.
Check-in and security
Two hours for domestic flights and three for international is the standard advice. Security queues vary a lot by terminal, and the busiest checkpoints are in the early morning and late afternoon.
- Terminals have different checkpoint capacities, so a queue in one may be much shorter than the one next door if your terminal has multiple entry points.
- Domestic passengers should carry acceptable identification. Requirements for domestic ID have tightened in recent years.
Lounges
Airline lounges are present in most terminals, with the widest choice in the international terminal. Independent and card-linked lounges also operate. Because terminals are not all connected, choose a lounge in the terminal your flight departs from.
Restaurants and food
The renovated terminals have a decent range of California-focused restaurants and coffee shops. The international terminal has the strongest selection. Older terminals still lean toward fast food counters.
Wi-Fi and charging
Free Wi-Fi is available throughout with a time-limited free tier at some access points. Charging is easy to find in refurbished gate areas and harder in older ones.
Baggage storage
LAX has limited left luggage provision compared with major European or Asian hubs. Independent operators near the airport offer storage, and some hotels will hold bags for guests. Do not plan a city visit around finding a locker in the terminal.
Airport hotels
There is a large cluster of hotels along the main road just outside the airport, all served by shuttle buses. None are attached directly to a terminal, so allow 20 to 30 minutes each way including waiting.
Sleeping at the airport
Overnight stays in the terminals are possible but uncomfortable, and access to some areas is restricted at night. With hotels a short shuttle ride away, a room is usually the better answer for a long overnight gap.
Family services
- Nursing rooms and pods are provided in several terminals.
- Changing tables are standard in restrooms across the airport.
- Play areas exist in a few terminals, particularly the newer ones.
Accessibility
Wheelchair assistance is provided by airlines and should be requested in advance. Shuttle buses used between terminals are accessible, but transfers still take time, so allow extra when connecting.
Layover guide
Ninety minutes is realistic for a same-terminal domestic connection. Allow three hours for an international arrival connecting to a domestic flight. Leaving the airport is only sensible with six hours or more, and even then traffic can undo the plan.
Things to do nearby
Manhattan Beach and El Segundo are 10 to 20 minutes away and far more pleasant than sitting in a terminal. Santa Monica takes about 30 minutes without traffic and considerably longer with it.
