6 Hours at Heathrow
A short connection that works best inside the terminal
Six hours is the awkward middle. Too long to sit at a gate, too short to relax into a city trip. The right answer depends almost entirely on whether you change terminals.
A same-terminal connection gives you real breathing room. A transfer between Heathrow's outlying terminals can eat most of the margin before you have found a coffee.

Transferring between terminals
Follow the purple flight connections signs from the moment you leave the aircraft. Airside transfer routes exist for most terminal pairs, so you usually do not need to enter the country.
- Take the first transfer vehicle offered rather than waiting for a coffee stop.
- Transfer security is a full screening. Liquids and electronics rules apply again.
- If you are directed landside, budget an extra 30 minutes for check-in and departures security.
Is a trip into London realistic?
Only with a same-terminal connection, no checked bags to reclaim, and permission to enter the country. The express rail service reaches central London in roughly 15 to 20 minutes, so the travel itself is not the problem. The problem is the two full security passes bracketing it.
Eating, showering and resting airside
- Lounges: airline lounges and pay-per-entry lounges operate in every terminal, most with showers.
- Food: each terminal has full restaurants beyond the fast food cluster near the shops.
- Quiet: upper levels and the ends of piers are consistently calmer than the central atrium.
- Showers and short stays: on-airport hotels sell day rooms, which suits a long onward flight.
Practical notes
- Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminals; download boarding passes early.
- Gate numbers appear late at Heathrow. Watch the screens rather than guessing.
- Some gates are a 15 to 20 minute walk from the main concourse.
